Mikel Arteta sends message to Arsenal flop after completing Mat Ryan signing

Mikel Arteta is adamant there is room in his squad for summer signing Alex Runarsson, despite the arrival of Mat Ryan on loan until the end of the season.

The Arsenal manager sanctioned the decision to recruit Iceland international Runarsson following the departure of Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa, but the 25-year-old has failed to convince, following a string of error-strewn display.

Without a reliable and experienced back-up option capable of covering for Bernd Leno, Arsenal’s hierarchy moved swiftly last week to seal the temporary signing of Ryan from Brighton.

Arsenal were said to be open to loaning out Runarsson, but Arteta is insistent that he needs three senior goalkeepers for the remainder of the season, despite Saturday’s FA Cup exit, and has challenged the former Dijon goalkeeper to prove his worth.

He said: ‘That area of the squad needs three goalkeepers and they need to compete with each other, challenge each other and everyone will get their role.

‘After you have your role, you just have to support each other again to get the best out of each other. This is the role, come here and try to make it better.’

Ryan, meanwhile, lost his status as Brighton’s undisputed No.1 to Roger Sanchez earlier this season, but Arteta is confident his latest recruit can thrive at Arsenal.

He added: ‘He is a player who knows the league really well. He has played so many games, he has international experience, he is at the right age, he has been competing regularly until December I think.

‘We felt with the departure of Matt Macey, we needed another keeper in the team to give more protection so we looked at the market and we wanted a loan deal and we decided to go with Mat because he had the right profile for us.
