Norway boss Stale Solbakken has backed Martin Odegaard’s impending move to Arsenal and sees various reasons why the versatile midfielder will be a good fit at the Emirates.

The 22-year-old requested a transfer away from Real Madrid in the January transfer window due to a lack of game time under Zinedine Zidane this season.

It was originally thought that Odegaard would wind up back at Real Sociedad, where he impressed on loan in the 2019/20 campaign.

However, an initial agreement has been reached to bring the Norway international to the north London club on loan until the end of the season.

The Gunners have been reliant on Emile Smith Rowe as their main source of creativity in recent weeks, with the 20-year-old academy product contributing three assists in his last five Premier League appearances.

Odegaard would provide some much-needed competition in midfield, and his international boss Solbakken believes his versatility and visionary passing make him well-suited to a number of roles in Mikel Arteta’s side.

He told Norwegian outlet VG: ‘First of all if it happens, I think it shows Martin has an extremely high level of confidence in himself, considering he is going into a new league and a team that, although they have improved a lot lately, had some good wins and climbed the table.

‘The way Arsenal play will fit him well, a kind of football that suits him. He can also play in different midfield roles, whichever Mikel Arteta chooses.

‘He will get assists and be a good team player.’

Martin Keown is also is no doubt of Odegaard’s talent, but worries what impact his arrival will have on fellow Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos’ place in the side.

‘I’m assuming Arsenal are all over it,’ the Gunners legend told talkSPORT.

‘He [Odegaard] brings that quality into the midfield. It’s an area Arsenal need to strengthen.

‘Does that mean [Dani] Ceballos will go? He’s on loan as well. Is he going to get football? Real Madrid may be concerned, he hasn’t played that much so far.’
