Arsenal legend Paul Merson has named Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s three ‘matchwinners’ ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Liverpool.

The Red Devils have recovered from a mixed start to the season to climb to the top of the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s trip to Anfield.

Merson insists Solskjaer deserves immense credit for turning Manchester United into title contenders and says the manager benefits from having ‘matchwinners’ Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford in his squad.

Fernandes has been one of the stars of the Premier League since he joined from Sporting Lisbon last January, scoring 27 goals in 45 appearances for United.

French World Cup winner Pogba is also enjoying a productive period for the club and scored the winner in Tuesday’s win at Burnley to send Manchester United top.

England star Rashford has gone four goals without a game but has nevertheless contributed 15 goals in 30 matches for club and country this season.

‘Credit where it’s due, Manchester United now have a chance of winning the title this season. They have got the players for it,’ Merson told the Daily Star.

‘They have matchwinners in Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford. And they have found some consistency in a season when everyone is struggling.

‘I’m not going to sit here and say Solskjaer is suddenly the greatest manager in the world. He’s not a Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp or Jose Mourinho.

‘And if United get beat 3-0 by Liverpool there will be serious questions asked all over again.

‘But they can go six points clear of Liverpool if they win this game and that is massive at this stage of the season.

‘It’s not so long ago Manchester City were ripping United to shreds. And they have rode their luck in the league. But they are getting results.

‘This is the proper test to see if they are the real deal though. Liverpool away is the one. And they have got every chance of winning the game against that Liverpool defence.’

Defending champions Liverpool were top of Christmas Day but have failed to win any of their three games since to slip behind Manchester United.
