Mikel Arteta has revealed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has missed Arsenal’s FA Cup clash with Southampton due to a ‘personal matter’.

The Arsenal captain was left out of the Gunners’ matchday squad for the trip to St Mary’s on Saturday.

Gabriel Martinelli, Eddie Nketiah, Nicolas Pepe and were selected in attack by Arteta, with Alexandre Lacazette and Bukayo Saka on the bench.

‘He [Aubameyang] had a personal matter in the last few hours and we had to send him back,’ Arteta revealed before the game.

Elsewhere, Kieran Tierney and Emile Smith Rowe were not named in the squad and have been rested ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Southampton next Tuesday.

New signing Mat Ryan, who confirmed his move from Brighton on Friday, has been named on the bench alongside Arsenal’s other back-up goalkeeper Alex Runarsson.
