Paul Merson delivered a savage assessment of Shkodran Mustafi as the defender sealed his move from Arsenal to Schalke on deadline day.

The Germany international’s disappointing four-and-a-half-year spell at the north London club came to an end on Monday after his contract was terminated.

Mustafi was quickly snapped up by Bundesliga strugglers Schalke to replace Ozan Kabak, who also joined Liverpool on the final day of the transfer window.

The 28-year-old moved to Arsenal in 2016 for a fee of £35million but struggled to live up to his price tag and caught plenty of flak for his rashness in defence.

Mustafi looked like he may have been turning a corner under Mikel Arteta last season as he cemented a regular starting berth towards the backend of the campaign.

However, a hamstring injury ruled him out for several months and by the time he returned to action, he had fallen well behind in the pecking order of centre-backs at the club.

The former Valencia defender has now signed a six-month contract with Schalke, who are rock bottom of the Bundesliga after losing 13 of their opening 19 league games this season.

Referencing the German club’s poor run of form, Gunners legend Merson brutally suggested the arrival of Mustafi won’t in any way help turn their fortunes around.

When asked whether he’s the type of player Arsenal could afford to let go, Merson told Sky Sports: ‘Yeah, and he’ll keep that record going as well at Schalke.’

Mustafi wasn’t the only outgoing Gunners player on deadline day, as academy graduates Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles sealed moves to Premier League clubs on loan for the rest on the season.

Willock joined Newcastle and Maitland-Niles moved to West Brom, with the duo both hoping for more regular playing time than they were being afforded at the Emirates.
