Arsenal failed with a late move to sign Barcelona left-back Junior Firpo on deadline day, according to reports in Spain.

The Gunners were in the market for a new left-sided defender in the January transfer window having allowed Sead Kolasinac to return to Schalke on loan for the remainder of the season.

Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand plus Crystal Palace duo Patrick van Aanholt and Tyrick Mitchell were all linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

But according to RAC1, Arsenal made an approach to sign Firpo on the final day of the window but an agreement could not be reached with Barcelona.

The 24-year-old has barely featured for Barca this season, playing just 147 minutes of football in La Liga.

RAC1 also report that Martin Braithwaite had attracted late interest from a Premier League club, but the 29-year-old has also remained at Barcelona.

Despite his lack of playing time this season, Barca boss Ronald Koeman was keen to keep Firpo at Camp Nou for the remainder of the campaign.

‘Junior is with us and he did well in the minutes he has had,’ Koeman said last month.

‘It depends on what each young player wants, we cannot lose all the players either. We need a squad to face the many games that remain.’

Arsenal had a busy end to an active transfer window as they allowed Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock to leave on loan.

Meanwhile, Shkodran Mustafi had his contract terminated by mutual consent which paved the way for his move to Schalke.
