Liverpool have been given the green light to complete a deal for Schalke centre-back Ozan Kabak after Arsenal agreed to terminate the contract of defender Shkodran Mustafi.

Jurgen Klopp is desperate to sign a centre-back before the transfer window closes given Liverpool are without Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Joel Matip through injury.

Schalke are willing to let Kabak move to Anfield on a loan with an option to buy but the Bundesliga club wanted to find a replacement for the defender first.

Their choice was Arsenal outcast Mustafi but Schalke were unwilling to put a fee for the former Valencia man.

However, SkySports report that the issue has been resolved as Arsenal have agreed to terminate Mustafi’s contract six months early, allowing him to move back to Germany.

This will allow Schalke to give the green light to Kabak’s wish to move to Merseyside and Klopp will assess the defender in the second half of the season before deciding whether to sign him permanently.

‘We just got the information that Mustafi has terminated his contract with Arsenal,’ said Sky Germany reporter Max Bielefeld.

‘He’s already agreed personal terms with Schalke. So Schalke normally should get their replacement for in before 5pm deadline in Germany.

‘That means the light is green for Kabak to go to Liverpool and to close a deal to Liverpool. It will be a loan plus an option to buy for Liverpool.’
