A bewildered David Luiz has hit out at referee Craig Pawson’s ‘unbelievable’ decision to send him off in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves.

The Gunners appeared to be cruising after Nicolas Pepe put them in front with a sublime solo effort in the 32nd minute but Tuesday’s Premier League clash turned on its head as Luiz was given his marching orders on the stroke of half-time.

The Brazilian was adjudged to have clipped Willian Jose from behind and Ruben Neves made no mistake with the resulting penalty before Joao Moutinho gave Wolves the lead with a thunderous long-range strike in the 49th minute.

Arsenal’s task was made even more difficult as Bernd Leno was also red carded for handling the ball outside his area and Nuno Espirito Santo’s side kept hold of their narrow advantage to secure all three points.

At his post-match press conference, Mikel Arteta admitted he was taken aback by Luiz’s sending off and confirmed the club would consider appealing the decision.

‘I’ve just seen the replay ten times in five different angles and I cannot see any contact,’ the Spaniard said.

‘If I’m sitting here now I would say yes [to an appeal]. We have to speak with legal at the club and see what the best thing is to do.

‘If there is any contact it’s him with David. I don’t know if they have a different angle to what they have or you have.

‘Those big decisions are like that but it’s nothing I can change at the moment.

‘It was a big decision and they can justify if they got it right then I put my hands up and apologise.

‘The only thing I’m saying is I’m sitting here and I cannot see any contact and it’s really frustrating because it’s a big moment in the game.’

Luiz was just as perplexed by the officiating on show at Molineux and took to Instagram to vent his frustrations shortly after the final whistle.

‘UNBELIEVABLE!!!!’ the defender fumed along with several angry emojis.

Wolves’ victory was their first in the Premier League since their win over Chelsea on December 15 and Nuno will hope his players pick up where they left off on Sunday afternoon when they play host to Leicester.

Arsenal, meanwhile, must quickly lick their wounds ahead of this weekend’s trip to Aston Villa, who sit one point and one place above them in ninth.
