Ian Wright hailed the performances of Granit Xhaka, Nicolas Pepe and Willian after Arsenal’s 3-1 victory at Leicester City on Sunday afternoon, while also praising manager Mikel Arteta after his left-field team selection.

The Gunners looked to be in for a tough day out at the King Power Stadium after Youri Tielemans opened the scoring for the Foxes after just six minutes.

Arteta was under pressure after leaving Bukayo Saka, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Thomas Partey, Gabriel Martinelli and Rob Holding on the bench and it looke dlike he had made the wrong choices.

However, his side bounced back thanks to goals from David Luiz, Alexandre Lacazette and Pepe to pick up the big win as they battle to pinch a European spot.

Gunners legend Wright was revelling in the fine win over Leicester, as the Foxes sat third in the table going into the contest, and picked out the displays of Xhaka, Willian and Pepe for their contributions.

Wright tweeted: ‘Xhaka, Willian, Pepe! Well done Arsenal. Well done Mikel Arteta. Wish Harvey Barnes a speedy recovery.’

Willian and Pepe were somewhat surprise inclusions in the starting XI with fans stunned to see Saka and Aubameyang warming the bench, including prominent Gunners fan and Twitter troll Piers Morgan.

The Good Morning Britain host tweeted: ‘Saka, Partey and Aubameyang all on the bench? Against Leicester? Wrong call, Arteta.

‘This is a 6pt game – we should be putting out our best team from the start, or have we given up on Top4?’

Morgan was happy to admit he was wrong after the win, though, swallowing his pride at full time.

‘Superb performance by Arsenal, totally vindicating Arteta’s team selection & making me look a complete numpty,’ he wrote. ‘Great to see Pepe & @willianborges88 really turn up today. Congrats @m8arteta – bold decisions, well rewarded.’

Arteta himself was delighted with his players, praising the same trio Wright picked out and the captain for the match, Lacazette.

‘Yeah he was very good,’ said Arteta of Willian. ‘We’ve seen that in training over the last few weeks. I think he’s revealing himself, he’s not accepting the situation. I think he was the player who changed the game against Benfica in the last few moments when he came on.

‘And today I think he was terrific, the same with the senior players, Laca I think the way he played, Nico he grew in the game and had a big impact. And Granit, a player who has played that many minutes to play with the heart and the passion he showed in every action I think it’s a good example for the rest of the players.’
