Manchester United beat rivals Arsenal and Tottenham to the signing of wonderkid Joe Hugill from Sunderland.

The Red Devils shelled out £300,000 to sign the 17-year-old from the Black Cats last summer and the striker is already being earmarked for a step-up to the first team by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Hugill scored four in a win against Liverpool for the U23s earlier this month and though Solskjaer was quizzed after the game about the debut of new signing Amad Diallo, it was Hugill that the Norwegian was raving about.

‘We’re gonna give him [Diallo] the time to settle in.. If we go from that game [vs Liverpool], I’d pick Joe Hugill,’ said Solskjaer.

‘Four goals by Hugill, he’s a top striker as well, we’re looking forward to seeing his development.

‘Amad gets a good start and why Joe didn’t take the penalty himself to get five goals I’m going to ask him.’

Sunderland were devastated to lose the promising striker but United were not alone in their bid to sign Hugill, with the Daily Mail revealing that the Red Devils beat rivals Spurs and Arsenal to his signature.

At the age of 17, Hugill is already 6ft2 and United expect him to grow at least another couple of inches in the next three years.

The striker has already trained with the first team and Solskjaer has shown his willingness to promote youth in recent weeks by calling Hannibal Mejbri and Shola Shoretire up to training.

United already boast academy graduates Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in attack, while Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba, Dean Henderson, Brandon Williams and Axel Tuanzebe have also emerged from the youth ranks.
