Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil says it was an ‘overwhelming feeling’ to come on for his Fenerbahce debut in the side’s 2-1 win over Hatayspor.

Ozil, 32, put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal with Fenerhahce – the club he’s supported since childhood – towards the end of the January transfer window after being left out of Mikel Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squads for the season.

The midfielder’s last played for the Gunners way back in March and Fenerbahce head coach Erol Bulut eased his new arrival in with a brief cameo appearance away in Antakya.

Mame Thiam put Fenerhahce in front with a diving header midway through the first half and Ozil was given 13 minutes to make an impression, with the visitors looking to defend their narrow lead.

And the German did just with a hand in Fenerhahce’s second as he found Ferdi Kadioglu on the right wing, whose brilliant cross was turned in by Hatayspor defender Jean-Claude Billong.

Altay Bayindir was in outstanding form all afternoon and made six saves to keep Fenerhahce in front but the young goalkeeper could do nothing as Aaron Boupendza reduced the deficit with a sublime volley at the death.

But Fenerbahce held on to move four points clear of Besiktas at the top of the table and a delighted Ozil took to Twitter to celebrate his side’s victory.

‘Overwhelming feeling to have made my debut for Fenerbahce,’ the 2014 World Cup winner tweeted.

‘And congrats to the whole squad – 3 crucial points.

‘Special thanks to our goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.’

Ozil also shared a picture taken in the away dressing room shortly after the final whistle.

He wrote: ‘Amazing feeling. My first match for Fenerhahce.

‘Congratulations to our team, very important 3 points are ours.’
