Rob Holding has sent a message of support to Shkodran Mustafi after the defender left Arsenal to join Schalke on deadline day.

The 28-year-old, who was signed in a £35 million deal from Valencia in 2016, mutually agreed to terminate his contract on Monday which paved the way for his move to the Bundesliga.

Mustafi had been the subject of abuse from some Arsenal fans due to his poor performances during his time in north London.

But Holding has paid tribute to his former teammate following his departure to Schalke.

‘Been here since the start of my Arsenal journey,’ Holding wrote on Instagram.

‘Wish you all the best on your new chapter. Success and health for you and your family. Good luck brother.’

Speaking about Mustafi’s exit, Mikel Arteta said: ‘Musti has been a key player for us for a long period of time.

‘He played a very important part in my first season as manager and I’d like to thank him for his professionalism and for always being ready when called upon.

‘Everybody at Arsenal wishes Musti well at Schalke.’
