Shkodran Mustafi has thanked his fans, ex-team-mates and former coaches at Arsenal after completing a move to Schalke and says it was an ‘honour’ to represent the club across his four-and-a-half year stay in north London.

The much-maligned 28-year-old was given permission to seek opportunities elsewhere after dropping down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta and reached an agreement with the Gunners which allowed him to terminate his contract six months early.

Schalke wrapped up a deal to land Mustafi once it became clear Ozan Kabak would was on his way to Liverpool and the Germany international put pen to paper on a short-term deal at the VELTINS-Arena, where he will be reunited with Sead Kolasinac.

‘Hi Gunners, after 4 years, 151 matches and 2 FA Cup trophies, I just wanted to say thank you to the Arsenal community, our great staff, the fans and of course my team-mates,’ Mustafi said in a brief statement on his social media pages.

‘Together we went through the good and not so good times. But we stood together.

‘Arsenal is a fantastic club with a great tradition and I always felt that it is a pleasure and honour to wear the AFC jersey.

‘My family and I will always remember the time we had in London and with Arsenal! Gooners, I wish you all the best! Thank you! Musti.’

Arsenal boss Arteta passed on his best wishes to Mustafi and thanked the centre-back for his service to the Gunners.

‘Musti has been a key player for us for a long period of time,’ the Spaniard said earlier this week.

‘He played a very important part in my first season as manager.

‘I’d like to thank him for his professionalism and for always being ready when called upon.

‘Everybody at Arsenal wishes Musti well at Schalke.’

Arsenal technical director Edu added: ‘We thank Musti for his contribution at Arsenal which has spanned four-and-a-half years, more than 150 appearances and a prominent role in two FA Cup wins.

‘Everyone associated with the club wishes Musti and his family the very best wishes for the next chapter in his career.’
