West Brom have reportedly agreed a deal to sign versatile Arsenal defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan until the end of the season.

Multiple clubs including Leicester, Newcastle and Southampton were all in talks over recruiting the 23-year-old, who has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth under Mikel Arteta this season.

But according to Sky Sports, the Baggies have won the race to secure Maitland-Niles’ signature and he is scheduled to undergo a medical in the coming hours.

Maitland-Niles needs more regular playing time in order to boost his chances of being included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament.

The Three Lions international was also wanted by Newcastle, but they are close to signing fellow Gunners academy graduate Joe Willock, and Premier League rules stipulate that clubs cannot loan two players from the same team at once.

The report states Arsenal were reluctant to let Maitland-Niles join Leicester, which was his favoured choice, as they didn’t want to strengthen one of their rivals in the race for the European places.

Maitland-Niles is thought to be interested in a move to the Hawthorns as he is more likely to play in his favoured midfield position.

In terms of other transfer activity for the Gunners on deadline day, Sky Sports also report that Shkodran Mustafi’s contract has been terminated and he will join Bundesliga side Schalke.

The Germany international’s deal wasn’t due to expire until the end of the summer, but with him falling down the pecking order of centre-backs at the club, an agreement has been reached to end his time at the Emirates early.
