Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will instruct his board to target Real Betis playmaker Nabil Fekir if a deal falls through to keep Real Madrid ace Martin Odegaard.

The Norwegian is set to return to the Bernabeu this summer as Arsenal failed to install a clause in the midfielder’s loan deal to permanently sign the playmaker.

It’s unclear whether the La Liga giants will listen to offers for the Norway international but it appears more likely that Odegaard will be sent out on another season-long loan.

Arsenal are keen to keep Odegaard but they’d prefer to sign him permanently and given that avenue appears closed off, the Gunners are exploring their options in the transfer market.

Fekir, 27, was a target for the Gunners two years ago before he swapped Lyon for Betis, while the midfielder reportedly failed a medical after agreeing to join Liverpool in 2018.

The France international has a release clause of around £77m in his contract but Betis would be prepared to listen to offers of around £26m, according to Goal.

Betis have been heavily affected by the pandemic and have conceded that they’ll need to balance the books this summer by selling off some of their prized assets.

It’s claimed Fekir has recently changed agents with an acceptance that he’ll be moving elsewhere this summer but Arsenal will first attempt to sign Odegaard before reassessing their options.

The Norwegian has reportedly told close friends that he wants to stay at Arsenal but his future will hinge on Madrid’s decision.
