Martin Odegaard has privately told friends he wants to stay at Arsenal next season.

The Real Madrid star’s current loan deal expires at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

But he has made it clear to pals that he wants to extend his stay at the Emirates, according to Football London.

There is no option to buy once his loan move ends but Real Madrid are thought to be open to selling him at the end of the season.

Given Arsenal’s financial situation and concerns they won’t be playing European football next season, however, a fresh loan deal may be preferable for the Gunners.

Odegaard, 22, has been impressed by Mikel Arteta and has faith in his project at Arsenal.

Arteta, similarly, is a fan of the Norway captain and would love to sign him on a permanent basis.

The club announced a loss of £47.8million for the 2019/20 financial year and may not be able to afford a big fee for the midfielder.

While Odegaard is keen to stay in north London, he will not force through a move if there is no suitable offer on the table from Arsenal chiefs.

He has been in good form this month and scored crucial goals in wins over Olympiacos and Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Gunners midfielder Paul Merson admitted he’d be ‘disappointed’ if Arsenal hadn’t already taken steps to try and sign him.

‘Martin Odegaard looks a really good player and I hope Arsenal have a chance of signing him permanently,’ Merson told Starsport.

‘Because if they don’t have a chance of making his loan permanent next season, why is he playing?

‘If they know he doesn’t want to stay, he shouldn’t be playing because he’s taking opportunities away from people like Emile Smith Rowe.

‘So I hope Arsenal have done their homework and know what the situation is – I’d be disappointed if they haven’t already made a bid to be honest!’
