Arsenal have been linked with a move for former Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi on a free transfer in the summer and his old teammate at Villa Park, Alan Hutton, believes it would be a good signing for the Gunners.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at Marseille in June and Arsenal are keen to bring him back to English football and compete with Kieran Tierney on the left side of defence.

Arsenal’s interest was initially reported in January, with Le10Sport now reporting that the Gunners are fighting AC Milan for his signature, while Marseille are also trying to convince him to sign a new deal at his current club.

The Frenchman has made over 100 appearances for Marseille since returning to his home country in 2017, being a regular in the side in Ligue 1 and in Europe.

Tierney is the first choice left-back at the Emirates, so attracting Amavi to be a back-up might not be easy, but Hutton feels he would do a good job in north London.

The Scot was at Villa at the same time as Amavi and was impressed with him as a player and a person.

‘He is a great guy,’ Hutton told Football Insider. ‘Everybody really liked him in the squad. For me personally, I thought he was a fantastic player. He’s really gone away and shown that at Marseille, which is a massive club on its own.

‘He was always a talented player. Again, very attack-minded, he could get caught out once or twice but I think he’s improved that. He’s a little bit older now, he’s experienced the Premier League so he knows what he’s stepping into.

‘If he goes to Arsenal, they’re a massive club trying to get back to those top European places. He will have great competition with Tierney there.

‘For a young French boy to come in, he just got on with everybody. He was funny and everybody really liked him. It’s nice to see him getting his rewards.’

Mikel Arteta has previously admitted that he is short of options at left-back after Tierney, with Sead Kolasinac out on loan at Schalke and Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan at West Brom.

Bukayo Saka has filled in there impressively, but is not naturally a full-back, while Cedric Soares can also be called upon but is right-footed.
