Everton forward Joshua King has revealed that he immediately sent a message to Martin Odegaard urging him to join Arsenal when he heard the rumours surrounding his Norway team-mate in the winter.

Odegaard, 22, had an outstanding loan spell with Real Sociedad last term before returning to Real Madrid, where he badly struggled for regular playing time in the first half of this season.

Zinedine Zidane was keen to keep hold of Odegaard but the midfielder, desperate to boost his minutes, pushed for a temporary move out of the Bernabeu and Arsenal struck a deal with Madrid towards the end of the January transfer window.

After being eased into the starting XI by Mikel Arteta, Odegaard has quickly become a key player for the Gunners and was brilliant on Sunday as the north London club came from 3-0 down to draw at West Ham.

‘When I saw the rumour about Arsenal, I sent him a message and said: “You have to go to Arsenal”,’ Everton and Norway striker King told NRK.

‘He replied, “Are you sure? Are you sure?” – I was so sure.

‘Arsenal’s style of play and Martin… I have friends who have played for Arsenal, and I know a little how the club is.

‘In my head, I think it suited him well.’

Arteta revelled in Odegaard’s performance at the London Stadium on Sunday and was particularly pleased with the Norwegian’s ability to keep a calm head when Arsenal looked destined for defeat.

‘I think he had an incredible performance,’ Arteta said.

‘I think he was very intelligent the way he read the game, the way he affected the game and again he showed how much he wanted to win.

‘When everyone was a little trembling he gave us that stability and that composure on the ball and he created chance after chance.

‘I love talented and creative players who are willing to make things happen.

‘It’s true that Martin is giving us a different level in certain things we didn’t have.’
