Martin Keown says he will be surprised to see David Luiz remain at the club beyond this summer.

Luiz has had contrasting fortunes during his time at the Emirates but remains a key part of Mikel Arteta’s defensive line.

The Brazilian is expected to start at the heart of the Gunners’ defence in Sunday’s north London derby showdown with Tottenham and while he has been impressed with recent performances, Keown believes there is no long-term future for him at the club.

‘When he came I said it was the wrong signing,’ Keown said.

‘I didn’t wait for six months or a year, I just felt it wasn’t the direction I would have gone in.

‘I was looking at it from a defensive point of view, as what I’m looking for as a priority for a top defender in a one-v-one situation.

‘David Luiz has surprised me with how well he has done but he needs to be in a back-five. He plays his best football in a five and at the moment we are playing in a four so there is always that vulnerability.

‘For that reason I would like to go in a different direction – we will see what happens in the summer, they should be looking at strengthening, they have got to be.’

Luiz’s current deal at the Emirates expires at the end of the season and Keown also says the club need ‘four or five’ new players to help the club challenge for trophies next season.

He’s [Arteta] cleared out a lot of baggage from the Wenger and Unai Emery eras because Ozil, Mustafi and Sokratis have gone and Torreira, Guendouzi and Kolasinac have gone out on loan,’ Keown told The Sun.

‘That’s a lot for a young manager to take on board and he’s been quite direct in making those big decisions.

‘But now he’s freed up the space in his squad and he can’t make any mistakes in the transfer market. He needs to bring in four of five this summer and the quality of player has to be absolutely top-drawer.’
