Martin Odegaard’s future remains unclear as he shines on loan at Arsenal from Real Madrid, but says a return to the Spanish giants remains ‘a big dream’ for him.

The 22-year-old joined the Gunners on loan in January and, after being introduced into the first team quite cautiously by Mikel Arteta, has found his feet impressively in the Premier League.

The Norwegian has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers in recent weeks and fans are keen to keep hold of him beyond the end of the season, when his loan deal expires.

Odegaard is loving his time in north London and could be open to a stay beyong this season, but he remains under contract at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2023 and Real Madrid may be keen to have him back after impressing in the Premier League.

He does not know where he will be playing next season yet, but does say that a return to Madrid, and going on to be a success there, is his dream.

‘Yes, as I have said many times when you sign there, the goal is always to play there. It is of course a big dream,’ Odegaard told TV2. ‘But at the same time I am in a nice club and am very happy where I am now. So I am very happy with the situation as it is now.

Asked what his gut feeling on his future is, he said: ‘It does not say much. I thrive where I am and enjoy myself a lot, then we will see what happens in the summer.’

Odegaard has talked very positively about his experience at Arsenal so far and has already played more games for the club than he has for Real Madrid, despite signing for them in 2014.

‘The deal with Arsenal is until the end of season. We’ll see what happens this summer,’ he told VGTV.

‘I’ve said things before that I still stand for: stability and development are key words.

‘I feel I quickly adapted and understood how we play. I lacked match fitness and self-confidence.

‘The more games I’ve played, the better I’ve become. It’s a rising curve.’
