Mohamed Salah is the greatest African footballer ever, reckons his compatriot and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny.

The two men are stars of their country’s national team, with Salah with the Liverpool man scoring 43 goals in 68 games, second on the all-time scoring list, while Elneny is the captain and has picked up 79 caps.

Elneny was presented with the tough task of choosing, not just Egypt’s, but all of Africa’s greatest ever player, with the likes of Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o in the mix.

However, he would not stray from his countryman and backed Salah as the best of the bunch.

Mohamed Salah is a legend now in Egypt and he’s still playing,’ Elneny told Arsenal’s YouTube channel.

‘We know that legends are usually when they finish their careers but when they’re still playing and people look at you as a legend this is something big. He’s a really good guy.

‘Toure, because he’s a midfielder I know what he’s doing and I know how it’s different, because it’s more difficult than a striker. Strikers get the chance to score all the time and midfielders have to do so many things.

‘But of course I go for Mohamed Salah.’

Last year former Liverpool striker El-Hadji Diouf claimed that he was the best African forward ever, which rattled Cameroon legend Eto’o, who then insisted he is the best ever from his continent.

‘Even if my brother Diouf the last time, with an extra glass, got a little lost, there is no debate,’ Eto’o told Goal, suggesting Diouf was drunk when making the sugestion.

‘None of them [Diouf and Drogba] can come and say that they were at my level or better. And it’s not the fact that I say it, it’s a fact, it’s something that is there. I wanted to be number one and I have been throughout my career.’
