Wayne Rooney has passed on his congratulations to Sergio Aguero for the ‘fantastic career’ he’s had with Manchester City but believes Thierry Henry is still the best foreign player in the history of the Premier League.

It was announced on Monday that Aguero, 32, is set to move on from City when his contract expires in the summer.

Aguero will leave City as their top scorer of all time – with an incredible tally of 257 goals in 384 appearances – and the Argentina international looks certain to add a fifth Premier League title to his impressive CV come the end of the season.

He also helped the club win the 2018/19 FA Cup and five League Cups across his decade-long stay after swapping Atletico Madrid for the Etihad back in 2011.

His stunning last-gasp winner against QPR in 2012 steered City to their first top-flight title in 44 years and the strike has since gone down in folklore as arguably the most iconic moment of the Premier League era.

‘He’s certainly one of the Premier League greats that’s for sure. He’s right up there. He’s a fantastic player,’ ex-Manchester United star Rooney, now Derby County manager, said at his press conference on Wednesday.

‘He’s been an outstanding player. He’s been an absolute revelation in the Premier League and one of the best strikers in the world.

‘His goal ratio is incredible and I’m sure he will be missed at Manchester City. I’m sure the Premier League will miss a player of his quality.

‘From my point of view, I’d just to congratulate him on his career over here.

‘Whether he stays in England or not obviously I don’t know but he’s certainly had a fantastic career with Manchester City.’

According to Rooney, Aguero is ‘right up there’ with some of the finest foreign imports to ever grace the Premier League.

However, the former England captain feels Henry stands alone as the best ever overseas player on these shores.

‘Aguero has been fantastic and is certainly right up there,’ Rooney added.

‘But if I was asked to choose then I’d probably say Thierry Henry was the best foreign player.

‘There’s a few in a pack just behind him who are right up there like Aguero, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Dennis Bergkamp and Eric Cantona.’
