Michael Thomas has backed Mikel Arteta despite Arsenal’s league position and feels the Gunners boss needs a complete revamp of his squad in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal’s humbling 3-0 defeat the hands of Liverpool last weekend has left the north Londoners down in 10th in the table and 10 points off fourth-placed side West Ham.

After getting knocked out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, the only chance of silverware remaining this season for Arteta’s side is the Europa League.

On Thursday, the Gunners host Slavia Prague in the first leg of their quarter-final clash against the team that has already knocked Leicester City and Rangers out of the competition.

Arteta has already spoken about the ‘unprecedented’ amount of business Arsenal need to do in the summer transfer window, and Gunners hero Thomas has detailed the five big signings his former club need to make at the very least.

‘I don’t think Arsenal need to be thinking about a new manager just yet,’ Thomas told CaughtOffside.

‘A new manager will experience the same issues until they have their own team of players in place to produce what they want.

‘I think Arteta needs to finish the season on a high with the Europa League and try and get more of his own players integrated into the team.

‘If then he cannot get his group of players to perform then Arsenal as a club will have to decide where they go from there.

‘I’d say a minimum of five signings are needed: a right-back, (Achraf Hakimi), left-back (Ryan Bertrand), central midfield (Yves Bissouma and Martin Odegaard), and a left winger.’

Discussing Arsenal’s need for a busy summer last month, Arteta said: ‘We are planning what’s going to happen in the summer. It will depend on where we finish, how we finish.

‘I think what we have to do in the summer is unprecedented for a club of this stature.

‘To do the amount of transactions that we have to make it tells you as well where we are.

‘I think it was very much needed and you want to improve, you want to do that.’
