Arsenal have opened negotiations with Emile Smith Rowe over a new contract.

Smith Rowe, 20, has emerged as an important member of Mikel Arteta’s squad this season, making 16 appearances this term after two spells away from the club on loan.

Alongside fellow academy graduate Bukayo Saka, the two have arguably been the club’s best attacking players this season with the Gunners tying the latter down to a new deal last summer.

The Athletic now report Smith Rowe is next with the club confident of tying him down to a new long-term deal with two years remaining on his current contract.

Smith Rowe was brought into the first-team on Boxing Day against Chelsea and alongside January arrival Martin Odegaard, has helped address Arsenal’s lack of creativity.

The youngster has registered seven assists in the Premier League and Europa League this term and was recently singled out for praise by club great Nwankwo Kanu, with the former striker recently naming him and Saka as the club’s standout players this term.

Kanu told Ladbrokes: ‘There are two names which spring to mind as far as Arsenal’s player of the season goes; Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka.

‘They offer the team so much through their versatility. Saka can play in so many positions, and when he’s not playing, you can see the side struggles without him.

‘Smith Rowe is a very good player. He can open up games and Arsenal definitely need him to play more in the next few years.

‘These two, for me, have been the best players for Arsenal this season – they can’t afford for either of those two players to get injured.’

Another Arsenal starlet in Folarin Balogun is also thought to be close to signing a new deal.

The 19-year-old’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season with the forward strongly linked with a move away from north London.

Balogun is now reportedly close to committing his long-term future to the club.
