Arsenal are still covering a whopping 90 per cent of Mesut Ozil’s £350,000-a-week salary despite the German playmaker having left the Emirates for Fenerbahce in January, according to reports.

The World Cup winner was exiled by manager Mikel Arteta when the Premier League restarted last season and did not make a single matchday squad this campaign before finally sealing a move away to Turkey in the winter window.

Despite the move being a free transfer and Ozil signing a contract with Fenerbahce until 2024, Arsenal agreed to continue paying a percentage of his salary to facilitate the deal and end the saga surrounding him.

But now The Athletic have revealed that the contributions Arsenal are paying to Ozil are far higher than previously believed, with the 32-year-old still the highest paid player at the club despite no longer playing for the Gunners.

Arsenal are currently contributing in excess of 90% of Ozil’s salary, which works out at £315,000-a-week – even more than skipper and top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is paid.

That means, since Ozil left Arsenal at the end of January, the north Londoners have forked out over £4million on a player who has not even kicked a ball for them.

Fortunately for Arsenal, the agreement with Ozil comes to an end at the end of June – when his previous contract with the club would have expired.

With the club set to be free of their mammoth commitments to Ozil by the summer, it has opened up a rather large amount of money which can be spent on the wages of new signings.

Arsenal hope that kitty will only get bigger, with David Luiz – another big earner – set to leave on a free transfer and loan deals for Martin Odegaard, Dani Ceballos and Mat Ryan all due to end.

The club also hope to cash in on Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, who have been on loan at Atletico Madrid and Hertha Berlin respectively, while the likes of Hector Bellerin and Reiss Nelson could also be offloaded.

With a number of spaces in the squad freed up and money shaved off the wage bill, Arsenal are looking to bring in a new number 10; their preference is to sign Odegaard permanently but alternatives are also being explored.
