Tony Adams feels Arsenal should’ve kept Emiliano Martinez last summer and claims the lack of competition in goal has left Bernd Leno looking ‘a little bit burnt out’.

Martinez excelled at the back end of last season when deputising for the injured Leno and helped fire Mikel Arteta’s side to FA Cup glory.

But the Argentine, who had been at the north London club for 10 years, wasn’t granted his wish to become the No.1 ‘keeper and left the Emirates to join Aston Villa.

Alex Runarsson was consequently signed as Leno’s deputy, but the Iceland international was unconvincing on his small number of appearances in cup competitions, which prompted the Gunners to spring into action in January and recruit Mat Ryan from Brighton on loan until the end of the season.

However, Leno has continued to play in both the Premier League and Europa League under Arteta, and former Arsenal captain Adams feels the number of games the Germany international has played has had an adverse effect on him.

‘I wanted both of them [Leno and Martinez] to stay, if you’re going to win the league, major competitions, Europa Leagues, you need two good quality goalkeepers,’ Adams told Stadium Astro.

‘Every time we did the double, in 1998, we had Alex Manninger, who backed David [Seaman] up superbly well, played about eight games.

‘But you can’t have a poor second-choice goalkeeper. Something can happen, they get tired, concentration levels.

‘We’ve only got Leno, we’re going to play him every single match now until the end of the season and he’s already for me a little bit burnt out.

‘He could’ve really done with a rest and just played the Europa League stage.

‘I wanted them [Leno and Martinez] to fight for the No.1.’
