Danny Murphy praised Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ‘brilliant reaction’ to being dropped by England as the right-back impressed in Liverpool’s 3-0 victory against Arsenal on Saturday.

Gareth Southgate omitted the 22-year-old from his latest Three Lions squad in favour of Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker, citing his recent dip in form as the reason why.

But in his first game after the March international break, Alexander-Arnold responded by producing a fine display for Jurgen Klopp’s side at the Emirates.

With the scores still level shortly after the hour mark, Alexander-Arnold whipped in a pinpoint cross which Diogo Jota expertedly headed in to open the scoring.

A tidy finish from Mohamed Salah and another effort fired in from close range by Jota wrapped up the scoring for Liverpool as they climbed up to fifth in the Premier League table.

And speaking on BBC Match of the Day, ex-Reds midfielder Murphy heaped praise on Alexander-Arnold and reiterated his previous claim that the defender’s crossing is comparable to that of former Manchester United and England star David Beckham.

‘Tremendous mental strength, character from a young man, he could’ve felt sorry for himself,’ Murphy said. ‘There’s been a lot of opinions on who should and shouldn’t play in the first XI [for England].

‘I don’t think any of us were surprised that he might not start but to not be in the squad was a real shock.

‘He consistently makes fantastic choices in the final third of the pitch.

‘Every time he gets in there he’s calm and picks the right pass. He’s actually a match winner as a full-back on so many occasions.

‘In a game when it was deadlocked at 0-0, a moment of brilliance opened up this Arsenal team that sat deep.

‘One of many, but the actual one that got the breakthrough for Jota, who did brilliantly when he came on as a substitute by the way, that is a phenomenal cross.

‘And as I’ve said before, I’ve only ever seen David Beckham cross the ball like Trent. He deserved great credit because some players would have let it [England rejection] get to them.

‘Brilliant reaction from a super player and if he keeps playing like that Gareth will have no choice but to put him back in.’
