Emi Buendia has revealed he had an opportunity to leave Norwich in the January transfer window but opted to remain with the Canaries.

Arsenal were strongly linked with a move for the Argentine playmaker who impressed in a Norwich that was relegated from the Premier League last season.

Mike Arteta had been desperate to add some creativity to his midfield at the turn of the year and earmarked Buendia as a primary target, before ultimately opting to sign Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid.

Buendia remained at Carrow Road and has played a key role in helping Norwich seal an instant return top flight with a string of impressive displays.

Draws for Swansea and Brentford on Saturday, confirmed Norwich’s promotion ahead of this evening’s game against Bournemouth ahead of which Buendia addressed his future.

He said: ‘I could have changed club. But I wanted to bring Norwich back in the Premier League. I don’t know what will happen in the next year.

‘I follow the whole of European football but I’m very keen on the Premier [League].’

Daniel Farke, Norwich’s impressive manager, has, meanwhile, played a key role in Buendia’s development and the German isn’t surprised his star player has attracted attention from several major European clubs.

He told the Telegraph: Double figures in goals, double figures in assists, fantastic in his work against the ball, fantastic in his workload, fantastic mentality, professional but also a great team player who works his socks off for the team.

‘He’s still a young player but he’s grown over the last couple of months and years in terms of his maturity. He plays an influential role and is a key part of this success.’
