Gary Neville has slammed the Premier League’s ‘big six’ for planning to join a breakaway European Super League and believes all of the clubs should be docked points as a punishment.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are all believed to have signed up to a new breakaway league which also includes Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan.

An announcement over the newly created competition could even happen tonight, with Uefa joining forces with the biggest football governing bodies in Europe to release a joint statement condemning the move.

Both the Football Association and the Premier League co-signed that statement, which threatened to ban any club who joins the European Super League from taking part in their domestic competition.

The news filtered through to United legend Neville while he was doing commentary for the Red Devils’ clash with Burnley and he was furious with the proposal.

‘In the wake of Covid, it’s an absolute scandal,’ said the former England international on Sky Sports.

‘Manchester United and the rest of the big six clubs who have signed up for it should be ashamed of themselves.’

Neville’s criticism did not stop there, with the pundit also taking a swipe at ninth-placed Arsenal for being among the elite clubs who would take part in the 20-team competition.

He continued: ‘The European Super League – are Arsenal in that? They’ve just drawn with Fulham!

‘And Manchester United are drawing with Burnley. I must admit, I can’t concentrate on the game, me.

‘They should be docked all the six teams that have signed up to it, deduct points off them all, to do it during a season it’s a joke.’

Roy Keane was equally unimpressed, saying of the rumoured breakaway: ‘It comes to money and greed. Obviously we have heard nothing from Fifa yet but it doesn’t sound good. Let’s hope it is stopped in its tracks because I think it is just pure greed.’
