Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed the club are ‘very close’ to agreeing a new contract with Folarin Balogun.

The striker has rejected two previous proposals from the Gunners and had looked set to leave the club at the end of the season, when his current deal is set to expire.

Arteta has made no secret of his desire to keep Balogun throughout the campaign and the Spaniard has maintained there’s a pathway into the first team for the 19-year-old.

‘We’re going to make it official when everything’s official and done,’ Arteta told reporters before tomorrow’s clash against Slavia Prague.

But I said before I’ve always been very positive that he wants to stay at the club and he wants to stay at the club.

‘We are very close.’

Balogun’s extension is a boost for Arteta and the club, who risked losing a valuable asset for free this summer.

The teenager received more than 15 offers to leave Arsenal, with Bayer Leverkusen, Everton and Crystal Palace interested in his services.

Balogun’s been given limited time in the first team due to his contract situation but he’s scored twice in five appearances for the club.

The striker can now expect to see more playing time come his way as he’s set to put pen to paper on a five-year deal.
