Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is hopeful that Emile Smith Rowe will return to training in time to put himself in contention for the Gunners’ clash against Liverpool this weekend.

The midfielder has been in fine form for the Gunners since the New Year but Smith Rowe failed a late fitness test before England’s U21 side beat Croatia at the European Championships.

The 2-1 win was not enough to take the Three Lions into the knockout stages and Smith Rowe returns to his club with a hip injury that was causing him discomfort.

Arteta confirmed this morning that the club will assess Smith Rowe’s condition today and take a decision on his participation in training tomorrow.

‘No he had some discomfort in his hip that’s why they decided to keep him out,’ said Arteta.

‘I don’t know! We will see today how he comes. We will speak to the doctors and the physios to see if he’s available for training tomorrow.’

Arteta was also quizzed about the fitness of Bukayo Saka.

The forward had to be pulled from the England squad due to injury and Arteta admits he’s a doubt to face Liverpool.

‘Well he hasn’t trained with the team yet,’ said Arteta.

‘He’s been doing some individual work we had to pull him out of the England squad, unfortunately.

‘But he’s feeling better but he hasn’t trained with the team yet.’
