Olympiacos are weighing up making a loan offer for Arsenal youngster Reiss Neslon this summer.

The 21-year-old featured prominently during the early weeks of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal reign but has dramatically fallen down the pecking order having been usurped by fellow academy graduates Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka this term.

Competition for places in Arsenal’s forward line increased in the summer following the arrival of Willian from Chelsea, while the January addition of Martin Odegaard represented a further blow to Nelson’s hopes of making an impact at first team level.

Overall, Nelson has made just nine appearances in all competitions this season and hasn’t played at all since he was taken off early in the second half during an FA Cup third round win over Newcastle on January 9.

The England Under-21 international had been encouraged to seek a loan move in January, with Norwich said to have been an interested party, but the winger opted to remain in north London and fight for his place.

Nelson, however, has effectively been frozen out by Arteta and didn’t even make the matchday squad for the FA Cup defeat against Southampton on January 23.

‘We ended up with a large squad at the end of the transfer market,’ Arteta said recently attempting to explain Nelson’s lack of game time.

‘We had a few plans in mind with Reiss. One of them was as well to send him on loan to get more minutes because of the competition we have upfront.

‘The reality is he has been really good in training. He wants to stay here. He wants to fight for his place.’

According to Football.London, Greek champions Olympiacos are now planning on testing Arsenal’s resolve during the close season and offering Nelson a temporary escape route.

Olympiacos, who signed Sokratis Papastathopoulos in January after the experienced centre-half effectively ended his Arsenal contract by mutual consent, were interested in recruiting Nelson last summer but are ready to reignite their interest in a player who shot to prominence during a loan spell with Hoffenheim three years ago.
