Villarreal could not resist trolling Arsenal after axed boss Unai Emery came back to haunt his old club with a ‘masterclass’ against the Gunners which left Mesut Ozil with egg on his face.

Mikel Arteta’s side only needed to score once in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final clash at the Emirates on Thursday to progress but mustered just a solitary shot on target and drew 0-0 as the Spanish side went through.

Emery endured a difficult time while in charge of Arsenal and was often a figure of ridicule, with fans mocking the way he said ‘good ebening’ instead of ‘good evening’ in press conferences and interviews.

But he got his revenge on his return to north London and Villarreal were quick to re-use the catchphrase that has followed Emery around ever since his days at the Emirates.

Following their progressing to the final, the club’s official twitter account tweeted ‘Good evening!’ along with a picture of Emery from his YouTube ‘Masterclass’ series which had also become a meme on social media.

The result also left one of Emery’s former Arsenal players looking a little sheepish, with Ozil having mocked his old manager’s pronunciation prior to the game.

‘Good ebening, Gunners,’ he wrote on Twitter shortly before kick-off, along with a winking-face emoji.

‘I hope my former teammates will turn this game around tonight – let’s go!’

But it was Arsenal who exited the Europa League in rather meek and lifeless fashion, and Ozil opted not to do a follow-up tweet following the side’s goalless draw with Villarreal.

Emery has spoken in the past about how he was mocked, telling The Guardian: ‘I had a decent level [of English], although I needed to improve.

‘When results are bad it’s not the same. You lack the linguistic depth to explain.

‘And take “good ebening”: OK, it’s “good evening”, but when I said “good ebening” and won it was fun; when we were losing it was a disgrace.’
