Mikel Arteta is unsure if David Luiz will play again this season after the Arsenal defender suffered an injury setback against Newcastle United.

Luiz was back in the Gunners starting XI after missing the month of April having undergone surgery on a knee problem.

The Brazil international enjoyed an impressive return as Arsenal eased to a 2-0 win at St James’ Park but was forced off early in the second half, going down with what appeared to be an issue with his left hamstring.

Arsenal face a crucial Europa League second leg clash with Villarreal on Thursday, trailing 2-1 from the first leg ahead of the visit of Unai Emery’s side this week.

Luiz could be set to miss out however with Arteta disappointed to have lost the 34-year-old to another setback.

‘We don’t know,’ Arteta told a press conference said when asked if this injury could signal the end of Luiz’s season.

‘He felt something in his hamstring so it’s not good news.

‘He’s put such a shift to be back with the team for the last few weeks after the knee surgery and it’s a real shame.’

Alexandre Lacazette and Kieran Tierney both missed the trip to Newcastle with Arteta confirming post-match both were still to return to full team training on Saturday and remain doubts for Thursday’s second leg at The Emirates.

‘They haven’t trained with the team yet so I think they’re unlikely to be,’ Arteta said of Tierney and Lacazette’s availability for the coming week.
