Mikel Arteta admits he’s astonished his side still have the chance to finish the season with a European spot.

The Gunners’ 3-1 win against Crystal Palace means just four points separate Arsenal in ninth and West Ham in sixth.

While the Hammers are expected to get the point they need against Southampton on the final day, Spurs face Leicester City away from home while Everton take on Manchester City at the Etihad.

It’s a golden opportunity for the Gunners – who face Brighton at home – to move up two spaces in the league table to finish in the European Conference League.

While the Gunners had hoped for more this term, it would still represent a good turnaround from the side’s form in the first half of the campaign.

Arteta was under huge pressure by mid-December, with Arsenal languishing above the relegation zone.

And the Spaniard admits he wouldn’t have believed it if somebody had told him around that time that his side could finish in Europe.

‘If somebody told us in November, December that we would have the chance to qualify for Europe in the last game, I would have said ‘you are crazy’,’ said Arteta.

Only Manchester City have earned more points in the Premier League than Arsenal since Christmas Day.

Arteta will be hoping his side can take that momentum into next season, when supporters will surely be less forgiving after such a poor campaign.

Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton, the Europa League by Villarreal and the Carabao Cup by Manchester City.
