Allan Saint-Maximin has urged Newcastle to sign Joe Willock on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window and believes the midfielder’s influence this season is comparable to that of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son at Tottenham.

Willock has shone in the Premier League since completing a loan move from Arsenal to St James’ Park in January, netting six times in his opening 12 games for the Magpies.

The 21-year-old has made a habit of scoring key goals in big moments which have helped steer Newcastle away from the relegation zone and Steve Bruce has made it clear he will be looking to extend his stay beyond the summer.

And with Willock reportedly deemed surplus to requirements at Arsenal, Saint-Maximin hopes Newcastle are doing everything in their power to convince the youngster to put pen to paper on a permanent deal.

Crystal Palace v Arsenal: Mikel Arteta press conference

‘We have to buy more players like Joe Willock, he can be really great for the team and for myself,’ the Newcastle winger told Sky Sports.

‘I am 24 years old, and have to think about the national team, about winning trophies, and hope the club can give me that.

‘My relationship is really good with Joe inside and outside the pitch, and you can see how that helps a team when you have players like that – like Harry Kane and Heung-min Son at Tottenham.’

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted it was a tough call letting Willock leave on loan when addressing the midfielder’s heroics on loan at Newcastle earlier this month.

‘It was a difficult decision to let him go because we really like the player,’ the Spaniard said.

‘But he needed more game-time and needed this type of experience.

‘He has stepped in at big moments for them and scored some crucial goals so that is really good news because it is great for his development.’

It’s understood Arsenal will be demanding a fee of between £25million and £30m for Willock this summer.

The England Under-21 international, who has been with the Gunners since the age of four, is tied into a contract at the Emirates until 2023.
