Why Willian wasn’t included in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad against Brighton

Arsenal winger Willian may well have played his final game for the club after he was left out of the matchday squad for the last game of the season against Brighton.

The former Chelsea star swapped west for north London last summer after Arsenal were prepared to offer him the three-year contract that Marina Granovskaia was unwilling to reward the Brazilian with.

After an encouraging debut, during which he registered three assists against Fulham, the 32-year-old has failed to deliver and been usurped by the likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, as well as the improving Nicolas Pape.

Willian finally broke his goalscoring duck at the 37th attempt for the Gunners in their recent 3-1 win over West Brom, but he was an unused substitute in the victories over Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

The versatile midfielder trained with the rest of the first team squad on Friday and was seen in the dressing room on Saturday while his compatriot David Luiz was filmed giving his own farewell speech having decided to seek a fresh challenge in the summer.

Arsenal, however, claim Willian, who has been linked with a move to Inter Miami, is suffering from a ‘tight calf’ and was therefore not able to take his place in the squad ahead of the game against Brighton with his team striving to finish above Tottenham for the first time in five years and gain unlikely entry in the Europa Conference League.
