Arsenal have scrapped plans to sign Brentford goalkeeper David Raya after a £10m release clause in his contract was wiped out by the Bees’ promotion to the Premier League.

Thomas Frank’s side were promoted to the top flight after a 2-0 win against Swansea in the play-off final on Saturday and in doing so Raya’s release clause was removed.

The Gunners have been tracking the 25-year-old Spaniard for over a year and had contemplated activating his release clause last summer after Emi Martinez’s move to Aston Villa.

However, Arsenal felt Raya was best served by another season with the west London club but that decision has come back to bite them as their plans are now in tatters, according to the Sun.

Mikel Arteta has doubts over Bernd Leno’s long-term future as first choice after a disappointing campaign for the German at the Emirates.

Mat Ryan was signed as emergency loan cover from Brighton in January and the Australian is set to sign for the club on a free transfer once his contract expires with the Seagulls.

Raya is valued at around £30m by Brentford and the club are unwilling to listen to offers for him this summer, given their determination to survive in the Premier League next term.

In any case, Arteta is unlikely to sanction such a large move for the Spaniard given he’s working with a tight budget and has numerous other areas of the pitch that need investment.

David Luiz and Dani Ceballas have already left the club, while Martin Odegaard is expected to return to Real Madrid.

Arteta is keen on signing a new right-back, a central midfielder and another centre forward but Arsenal’s failure to qualify for Europe means the Spaniard will likely have to sell before he can buy.
