Sergio Aguero’s father has revealed the striker held talks with both Arsenal and Chelsea before moving to Barcelona, while he also fired a dig at Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

The Argentine forward left the Etihad after 10 years at the club having been informed his contract would not be renewed at the backend of the season and he confirmed his move to Camp Nou on a free transfer on Monday.

However, Aguero’s dad claims the 32-year-old had not wanted to leave City and very nearly opted to stay in the Premier League after his release, with Arsenal and Chelsea both in for him.

‘He is happy right now after signing for Barcelona. I see him happy,’ Leonel Aguero told Argentinian radio station Radio La Red.

‘But he didn’t know what was going to happen with his future. There were several clubs interested in signing him.

‘Arsenal were interested in him and Chelsea to the last minute. If he didn’t stay in England, it was going to be Italy or Spain.

‘He’s been friends with Lionel Messi since they were 15 and they’ve always talked. It looks like Messi is going to stay at Barcelona so they’re going to play together.’

Aguero had worked with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta when he was a coach at City and the Spaniard was gushing in his praise of the striker when it was announced he would be leaving the club.

‘It was an absolute joy to work with him,’ said Arteta last month. ‘His character, his personality, he’s a loveable man and then one of the best talents that I’ve seen.’

Aguero’s father also took aim at Guardiola over his son’s departure from City, accusing the coach of faking his tearful farewell interview and insisting the former Barca boss never wanted him at the club.

Asked if he’d been moved by Guardiola’s tears, Leonel continued: ‘No, I don’t believe him. He was never sincere with my son. He never wanted him in my opinion.

‘He wants to be the protagonist in his clubs rather than the player.

‘From one day to the next he changes the players, he changes the midfield, you never know if you’re the main choice player or not.

‘My son was waiting right up to the last moment to renew with City but it didn’t happen.’
